The Brennens…

  • Terrible Blogger…

    July 17th, 2016

Ok so I failed at blogging on this trip…because I was too busy relaxing! It was a complete departure from our usual adventures and that couldn’t have been more appropriate! We did some of the typical OBX things (wild horses, Wright Brothers Memorial, Bodie Island Lighthouse, The Lost Colony) but we also saved a lot for the next time. When I went to Europe the first time, my tour guide, Jutta, told us that we should always expect to return…we should see that trip as our introduction, not the final chapter.

For me, this was an emotional chapter…it was the first time in seventeen years that I’d been in Kitty Hawk and the first time without my mom. Of course the occasion of our visit, my baby sister’s wedding, didn’t help with the range of emotions! In this case, it isn’t a WILL I be back so much as WHEN, so rushing around to see everything was definitely not a priority. Lots of toes in the sand and celebrating the new couple and making NEW memories definitely was.

So I’ll share some pictures, and share some memories, and for those of you who waited with bated breath for the thrilling adventures of The Brennens, this will probably be pretty disappointing, but for us, it was perfect. Catch ya on the next adventure! 🙂

    June 22nd, 2016

In the grand tradition of travels with The Brennens, thus begins another set of blogs!

We set off at midnight today for Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The drive has largely uneventful, except for the driver behind us being rear ended as we detoured across Virginia. The tail gating is real, people.

The vacation is exciting but the best part is that we are headed this way for MY SISTER’S WEDDING!!!!!! So exciting! (I think she would tell you that the most exciting part is that the planning is done!)

I haven’t been to the OBX since before they called it that and I’m so excited to go back. I’m even more excited to share my childhood vacation spot with my hubby.

By the way, our packing for this trip is ridiculous. We pride ourselves on taking tiny suitcases/backpacks for two weeks in Europe but have packed the Subaru to the gills and conned Emily and my dad to haul some of it bigger things for us. Go figure.

  • Another month.

    March 27th, 2016

Sadly, our two week wait ended up fruitless. We prayed, waited, prayed, waited, and found that we are NOT pregnant after our “first try.” Devastated doesn’t begin to describe how we felt.

    But, we press on.

I called the doctor when I got my period to tell her and ask for another prescription for Clomid and she reminded me of the process…three tries on Clomid, then we try other routes…but we are all hoping that this month is it. Hopefully all I need is a kick in the ovaries from the Big C and we’ll be good to go!

Today starts another fertile window – another flashy face on the ovulation stick! – which will lead into another two week wait. I’m praying that this is it! And that if it’s not, we can hang in without losing hope.

  • Solid. Smiley.

    March 3rd, 2016

Today is the miracle day. Or the first of many, I hope!

Today we got the Solid Smiley.

The solid smiley face on a Clearblue Digital fertility test indicates peak fertility – or an LH hormone surge in your body. The egg has been released.

For someone who probably has either never or not recently ovulated, this is huge news.

We walked around the auto show yesterday and I whispered to Shane that I had symptoms to share – sore boobs and pain in my lower abdomen – specifically on the left side. I was excited to test again  when we got home but saw the same result we’ve had for days – the flashing smiley.

This morning, one of my many fertility apps told me that, based on my data, I probably missed my window. My most fertile day was Friday and now we are decreasing in fertility until next month. Big Frowny Face. I diligently took the ovulation test then took a bath. For a while.

When I got out of the tub, I got the surprise of the day – the Solid Smiley.

I, needless to say, screamed excitedly for Shane (who, poor guy, was asleep and thought he was in trouble for sleeping too long!) to come and see the miracle stick! We of course cried tears of joy. Who knew this was possible for me? For us?

    And now the wait begins…

    February 20th, 2016

    We got big news today.

Not BIG news, but big news.

I tried all of the ovulation predictor “stuff” for three months solid, a little over a year ago. We tried for six months to no avail so I figured I should try something else. I bought the tests, bought the thermometer, and started “checking.” (I’ll leave it at that!) Each day, nothing. No signs. No dramatic spike in temperature, no positive signs of being fertile. It was frustrating – and expensive – to see the same news every day.

    Eventually, I gave up.

  • Journey to Fertility

    February 16th, 2016

I have been hesitant to share our journey through fertility…no matter how far we’ve come as a society, it’s still a difficult subject. Not being able to produce a child is embarrassing at best, so when that happens to you…it’s just hard to know what to do, what to say…

So today I am writing our story because I believe that one day it may help someone else. At the very least, it may help our families to understand us better.

Shane and I have been trying to have a baby for nearly two years. We waited for about nine months after we were married to start “trying” because my hopeful plan was to be due to deliver around spring break of the following school year and be able to stay at home from then until the start of the following school year.

Of course, that was not to be.  (more…)

  • Summer 2016 – the OBX

    December 30th, 2015

“My Baby Sister Emily” and her fiancé Chris are giving us a great opportunity this summer – they are getting married in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, which of course sets us up for a fabulous beach vacation!

We are staying at the Hilton Garden Inn Kitty Hawk (the site of the wedding) for the first four days, then will relocate to Summer Palace, our rental house, for the following week.

Hilton Garden Inn (the reception will be on the pier itself).
Summer Palace, our vacation rental for the week following the wedding.

I haven’t been to the OBX since…before they called it that! Our family vacationed there when we were kids and teenagers with a variety of friends and family. This year we will be with all of our nearest and dearest at different times throughout the wedding and vacation – and I can’t wait!

  • River, Rescheduled

    June 28th, 2015

This morning we got up intending to sail the Rhine downstream to St. Goar, visit, then head back to Bacharach for a drive up to Burg Eltz, one of Rick Steves’ coveted three triangle destinations.

We got up, had some more yummy German/continental breakfast (meats, cheeses, yogurt, etc.) and set out for the boat to St. Goar. On the trip, we found another set of Rick Steves fans who were headed in the same direction for the same sights. They forgot their book (much like our friends from Wisconsin from the night before – we made friends on the self-guided tour who were also Ricky fans) so they listened in to Tour Guide Barbie’s narration of the Rhine highlights (the Mrs. is pictured below with Tour Guide Barbie!). We saw castles and rocks and ridges and reefs all adding to the Rhine’s legends and myths.

  • Heading to the River

    June 27th, 2015

This morning we had one stop to make on our way out of Rothenburg – the Crime and Punishment Museum. Ricky (Steves of course!) gave it two triangles (of three) so we knew it was worth the time. After a lovely breakfast at Gastehaus Rothenburg, we moved the car (yep, parking bans are here too!) and made our way back to the center of town. We did a little shopping as we waited for the museum to open, then descended on medieval justice.
